What Do High Acheivers Do to Achieve Their Goals?

Updated: 2 days ago

What Do These Three Things Have in Common?

  1. Mind Mastery

  2. Emotional Intelligence

  3. Decisions to Build the Life You Truly Desire

They ALL belong at the top of the Pyramid of Self-Actualization.

How do High Achievers Attain Self-Actualization?

Every result in your life can be traced back to a decision.

And every decision is influenced by one of two forces:

Emotion or Intention

Self-control is the Bridge Between Emotion and Intention.

High achievers are not simply ambitious.

They are governed.

They have learned to master their minds, regulate their emotions, and make intentional decisions — especially when it is inconvenient.

Self-control is not limitation.

It is leadership — over yourself first and this is why high achievers take the steps towards self-actualization.

Self-actualization simply means reaching your fullest potential by aligning your actions with your deepest values and unique talents.

When attempting to achieve self-actualization self- awareness is needed. If you haven't realized SELF is at the forefront and it's not about selfishness it's about focusing on you. It's about who you are and where you want to be, however in order to bridge that gap, you need to be more active in your life... and stop cruising on the autopilot of life.

Daily Routine of Low Driven Individuals

Wake up ... get ready for work ... smile with my annoying coworker who sits across from me ... get some work done ... eat lunch ... scroll on social media until work is done ... go home ... scratch butt ... do some "stuff" until bed time ... do the same thing again tomorrow.

This is the definition of the death and burial of self- actualization. There is no intention, no realization that the life we have is ticking by with each second. There is so much potential in every living person on this earth. What are you doing with your time?

Building the Walls of Self- Control

Without self-control, boundaries collapse.

With self-control, stability is built.

Proverbs 25:28 reminds us, "He that has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down and without walls".

Ask yourself "What is inside my city?" But first remember you are a city not a country and here's the difference: a country is made up of many cities but a city is a self-contained system; you are not resposible for ruling the whole world, however you are responsible for ruling yourself.

You are not meant to control everyone else's emotions, behaviours, or opinions. You are meant to govern your own internal world.

Your:

  • Thoughts

  • Emotions

  • Habits

  • Reactions

  • Decisions

That's your jurisdiction.

Self-control is about self-governance, not world govenance.

Awareness is the brick that builds your wall of self-control. Your walls are your boundaries and also your protection.

When a wall is erected it sets boundaries, it shows something personal. It means you are aware of who and what enters and there is something personal and of high value behind those walls.

When you lay each brick it represents your awareness of:

  • What you allow in your mind

  • What influences you consume

  • What behaviours you tolerate

  • What habits you permit

When you lack self-control:

  • Anger riots in your streets

  • Fear vandalizes your vision

  • Impulse loots your future

  • Distraction occupies your time

The Relationship Between Awareness and Self-Control

Self-control is the muscle that does the heavy lifting of your life, awareness is the nervous system that tells the muscle when to flex. Without awareness, self-control is a blind giant - powerful, but just as likely to knock over your goals as it is to build them.

You cannot regulate what you haven't yet recognized. Awareness provides the vital "lead time" necessary for your will power to actually show up to fight.

Without self-control, boundaries collapse

With self-control, stability is built

To understand how awareness fuels your restraint, look at it through these lenses:

  • The Shadow and the Spotlight: Our habits and triggers love to operate in the dark, they thrive when we are on autopilot. Awareness is a high-powered spotlight. When you shine it directly on a racing or a rising temper, the "monster" often shrinks. It's hard for a bad habit to survive the akwardness of being watched. By simply observing the urge noticing how it feels in your chest - you strip it of it's mystery and it's power to control you.

  • The Director's Cut: Life usually feels like a live broadcast where you're watching in

real-time. Awareness is the "seven- second delay" used in live television. It gives you a tiny, invisible window to catch a "profanity" in the mind before it hits the airwaves. While the world sees a seamless, controlled performance, you know the truth: you saw the harsh response coming and hit the "mute" button before it could ruin the show.

Self-control isn't only about having a stronger mind; but it's also about having a clearer one. By the time you're white-knuckling a temptation, awareness has already failed you. But when you sharpen your internal vision, you catch the "smoke" of an emotion before it becomes a wildfire. You move from being the fire-fighter to being the person who never let the match get lit.

An Exceptional Example of Self-Control

No one is perfect but the evidence of this person's self-control is above expression. I'm talking about Daniel. Yes, that brother that was thrown into the lion's den because of his phenomenal self-control. Daniel demontrated self-control in so many different aspects that he is a perfect example of what to do to obtain control of self. He was mindfully in control of self that even with the threat of being thrown into a pit of lions he maintained his mental capacity to overcome his fear and focus on reality. God is greater than our biggest fear.

He was also in control of his appetite which many of us struggle with, because in the face of being offered portions of the king's meat and his wine; Daniel chose to become a vegetarian. Not only for the ten days of trial but after his trial was successful, he continued the vegetarian diet for some time after that. I can only imagine what was being offered. I mean this is Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian King who ordered that all of his wise men be killed because they could not tell him a dream he forgot and it's interpretation. Sheesh... talk about pressure. Daniel also showed that he was in control of his emotions. Throughout the book of Daniel we can see different levels and situations that identify how self-control is used and it's outcome.

That's one of the main reasons I decided to do a "Daniels' Fast". Not until I stepped under the microscope and examined my life did I realize how much I was lacking self-control. I was heavily particpating in doom scrolling, emotional eating and impulsive spending, all anti self-control actions. The habits and behaviours that had become a part of me was not in alignment with my future goals and aspirations. There was a gap between my actions and my goals. The path that my actions was laying would not lead to my intended destination. So with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I decided to abstain from meats, sweets and doom scrolling for 21 days. I must say I got a keyhole glimpse of how an addict must feel when they are fighting their addiction. The experience was enlightening and empowering and I recommend it to any one that would like to strengthen their self-control and become a high-achiever.

The Reality for High Achievers

High achievers understand this truth. Before you build influence, Before you lead a company, Before you impact a nation - You must govern yourself. Self-control is major authority over your mind.

High achievers are faced with the same obstacles and situations we encounter. The difference is the way they handle them; instead of choosing the more emotionally stimulating and comforting route they put systems and routines in place.

High achievers build:

  1. Morning routines

  2. Financial systems

  3. Emotional boundaries

  4. Structured goals

They do not depend on moods. They depend on standards.

And most importantly they are consistent.

Daily Habits That Strengthen Self-Control

Self-control is like a muscle. It grows with training.

Try this:

  1. Pause Before Responding

  2. Count to five before replying in tense situations.

  3. Delay Small Gratifications

  4. Wait 10 minutes before giving in to distractions.

  5. Keep One Promise to Yourself Daily: A workout. Read a chapter. Enforce a boundary.

  6. Reduce Decision Fatigue: Save your mental energy for what actually matters

  7. Simplify routines so your energy goes toward important choices.

  8. Practice Intentional Silence

Not every thought needs to be spoken.

Small disciplines build powerful character.

Will You Share What Challenges Your Dedication to Self-Control?

For me at first it was awareness and then it was just not wanting to do what I knew I needed to do. It was such a weird feeling, an internal struggle with who I was and who I needed to be to achieve my goals. One of the things that really helped me was doing a little at a time but consistently. Because no matter how much motivational videos and inspirational quotes I watched and read; not until it became my personal mission did the fight really begin and my mission to be a high-achiever started shaping up.

This was a powerful and inspiring read. I really appreciated how you showed that high achievement starts with self-mastery especially the connection between awareness, emotional control, and intentional decision-making. The “city with walls” analogy and your reflection on the Daniel fast made the message practical and relatable, reminding us that discipline isn’t restriction but leadership over our own thoughts, habits, and actions. Overall, this article is motivating, clear, and a strong reminder that consistent self-control is the foundation for reaching our full potential.
